England Vs South Africa Rugby World Cup Final:
21:00 on 20th October 2007.

Match Summary:
The game started full of excitement, with Jonny Wilkinson’s kick opening the match. England pushed hard in the first 5 minutes, putting South Africa under extreme pressure, it seemed as this was the Rugby World Cup Final EVERYONE had been waiting for.

After 6 minutes, England were reckless to give away an unnecessary penalty, and Percy Montgomery - with nerves of steel managed to kick South Africa into the lead.

England’s reply from Jonny Wilkinson came 4 minutes later with a difficult penalty kick - but he managed it with ease. The game turned for the worse and became messy thereafter, with punches from both English and South African players not being cited by the referee.

Montgomery managed to score a penalty kick in the 15th minute, but failed to score the next one, 5 minutes later. Late in the second half South Africa were on the English tryline, pushing for a try, which seemed inevitable. But instead England gave away a penalty, and instead of going for the try, South Africa chose to go for poles. Percy Montgomery put the score at half time 9-3 to the Springboks.

The second half started with as much excitement as the first, England were dramatically denied a try, which was sent up to the TMO (Touchline Match Official) for reviewing. Cueto was ruled out of play as he pressed the ball down for the try, his leg was out, and hence no try was awarded.

Montgomery’s kicking was on target with his 4th in the 51st minute. There was some drama between Montgomery and English player Toby Flood who pushed Montgomery into a camera that was 4 meters off the field, when it was completely covered in the Springbok touchline by Montgomery. Flood got away without even receiving a yellow card - a huge boo came from the crowd when the replay was shown on the big screen.

Jonny Wilkinson had two attempts at drop goals, but failed in both - as the South African forwards refused to give the danger man any space at all.

After Montgomery’s collision with the cameraman, it was young Francois Steyn who took the last penalty of the game, and with great calmness me managed to get the three points for the men in Green and Gold.

South Africa were the better team on the day, as English captain Phil Vickery said after the match. The Springboks are the Rugby World Cup 2007 Champions - The winners of the Rugby World Cup 2007.
